Raised in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Jemison discovered her passion for science and space at a young age. Jemison excelled academically, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University before obtaining her Doctor of Medicine degree from Cornell University Medical College.
Her passion for space took her far, as Dr. Jemison made history as the first Black woman astronaut to enter space when she flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992. This groundbreaking accomplishment not only solidified her place in space exploration but also inspired generations of aspiring scientists and astronauts.
After her space mission, Dr. Jemison utilized her medical background and dedication to humanitarian efforts to tackle healthcare inequalities globally. Prior to her astronaut career, she served as a medical officer with the Peace Corps in Africa for two years. During her time in space, she acquired knowledge in satellite telecommunications. Combining these areas of expertise, she established the Jemison Group, an organization focused on designing and implementing telecommunications solutions to enhance healthcare services in developing nations.
