Please ensure you and your team members are adhering to HIPAA regulations regarding the proper disposal of patients’ Protected Health Information (PHI). All documents containing PHI should be placed in your location’s locked shred bin for disposal. Before throwing away any paperwork, please take a moment to double check the content and when in doubt, shred it.
As a reminder, under HIPAA, PHI is considered to be individually identifiable health information relating to the past, present, or future health status of an individual that is created, collected, transmitted, or maintained by a HIPAA-covered entity in relation to the provision of healthcare, payment for healthcare services, or use in healthcare operations. This relates to any and all printed materials that could be used to establish the identity of an individual.
