To celebrate our dedication to using AIDET to enhance the patient experience, check out this submission from Courtney on how AIDET helped her patient:

During a recent outpatient appointment, I used the AIDET framework to support a newly diagnosed patient with type 2 diabetes who was feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. He shared with me that he believed he was healthy and didn’t need to go to the doctor, but then last month ended up in the hospital due to his undiagnosed diabetes.

I greeted him by name (and ensured the pronunciation was correct), made eye contact, and acknowledged that receiving a new diagnosis can feel like a lot to process. I reassured him that he was in the right place to get support and that we would take it step by step. I provided my name and introduced myself as a registered dietitian who specializes in helping people manage chronic conditions like diabetes with nutrition. I briefly shared how I work collaboratively with patients to create realistic and sustainable nutrition plans and goals. I let him know the session would take about 30 minutes and explained that we’d use the time to review his recent lab work, talk about his current eating habits, learn about what impacts blood sugar, and start building a diabetes-friendly nutrition plan that fits his lifestyle. I explained that our goal wasn’t perfection, but progress and that we’d focus on small changes to support his blood sugar, energy levels, and long-term health. I answered all of his questions and provided my email for future questions he had. At the end of the session, I thanked him for showing up, for being open during our conversation, and for trusting me to be part of his care team. We booked a follow up session so I could continue to support him on his health journey.

By using AIDET, I was able to ease his fears, build rapport quickly, and set a supportive tone for future visits. It was a very impactful experience!
