Beware – Health Care Identity Scam

Scammers are targeting healthcare industry workers! These scammers are impersonating law enforcement/government officials to extort money or steal personal information by stating the person has an active subpoena. Here are a few warning signs and tips to protect your identity if this were to happen to you.

How Scammers Operate:

  • Scammers gather target info from medical websites and social media.
  • Use fake credentials and authentic phone numbers/names.
  • Claim target’s subpoenaed for court testimony.
  • States there is an arrest warrant issued for not appearing in court.
  • Threaten arrest and license revocation.
  • Demand payment (prepaid cards, wire transfers, cash) for fine or suggest a meeting to rob them of their personal property.
  • Scare tactics used, mentioning surveillance and raids.

Protection Tips:

  • Agencies or courts won’t demand payment via phone.
  • Agencies or courts will not demand you meet them at a location “close to” the actual address.
  • No legitimate agency uses prepaid cards or cryptocurrency.
  • Verify agency and request before sharing personal info.
  • Legitimate legal documents are done in person or official letter.
