By now you’ve probably seen some people at NOAH and other places include their pronouns in their work signature. Wondering what it is all about? We’ve got some info for you and easy tips to update your NOAH signature.
Why Are Pronouns in Signatures?
We are all familiar with our work signatures (and if you aren’t, there’s a helpful “How To” below!) so that whoever we are emailing knows who we are, our title and often department, usually workplace address and website, and phone number(s). But you can’t always guess someone’s gender based on the name in their signature. Listing our pronouns takes the guesswork out for others.
Why Are Pronouns Important to Include?
Because they are part of who we are! For some people, this has never been an issue. But for others it can be an issue. By having pronouns as the norm, it is respectful and inclusive for everyone. It is a small thing – just a few words – but can tell a lot more about the workplace and team members by including them.
This is especially true for people who may get misgendered. Having someone use the wrong pronoun can cause discomfort, pain, or even alienation.
Do I need to Include my Pronouns?
Nobody has to, but if you want to include yours to show others that NOAH is a welcoming and inclusive organization – for staff and patients – it is a small act that says a lot.
How Do I List My Pronouns?
It is pretty easy! If you don’t have a signature set-up already, you can follow these steps and do it all at once.
- Open Outlook
- Select “File” in the top left corner
- Then select “Options” in the bottom left
- In the pop-up window, select “Mail”, 2nd option on the right
- Then select “Signatures”, 3rd option on the left
- Select “New” if you don’t have one or click on your current signature and edit.
